WORKSHOP 1: Waxing History and Culture in the Classroom with Batik

More than just a simple piece of fabric, batik is also a written narrative that paints the history of its wearers and producers. Through its motifs, colours and even styling, batik can reveal a lot about a person. Join us as we explore the stories of batik and learn how this fabric can be used to reinforce through this interactive workshop. Participants are invited to bring their own batik or come dressed in their batik as part of the group activity and experience how you can apply the techniques learnt in the classroom.

Hafiz Rashid
Museum Docent
Hafiz Rashid is an experienced museum docent who has been volunteering with the National Heritage Board (NHB) since 2013. He is also a storyteller who has performed at various events and venues such as Storyfest at the Arts House in 2019, 2022 and 2023 as well as Singapore Heritagefest 2023. In 2021, he received the Teman Warisan award in recognition of his dedication and contribution to the Malay arts and heritage sector. His research interests include learning about the history, culture, folklore and languages of the Malay Archipelago (Nusantara) with a special focus on textiles. Hence, he is often seen wearing these textiles in his tours and incorporates them in his storytelling, sharing the stories behind their motifs and designs – stories with deep links to the past.
Shahril Samri
Educator, PCF Sparkletots Preschool
Shahril Samri is an educator at PCF Sparkletots Preschool, where he passionately teaches both Malay and English languages. Beyond his teaching role, he is an avid enthusiast of Pantun (Malay Poetry) and the visionary founder of Pantunism, dedicated to instilling the importance of the Malay language in children. His aspirations are to elevate Pantun to a prominent position in Singaporean literature. He is committed to perpetuating the art of Pantun composition to future generations despite the challenges that lie ahead. Shahril’s contributions have been duly recognised, earning him the Ministry of Education Outstanding Preschool Mother Tongue Language (OPMTL) 2021 Teacher Award and the prestigious appointment as Sahabat Sastera by the Malay Language Council of Singapore (MBMS) in 2021.
WORKSHOP 2: Engaging Young Minds: Exploring the Techniques of “Call 2 Action” for the Classroom

This workshop provides teachers with an in-depth exploration of innovative methods for engaging young minds through digital collaboration.

Participants will gain insights into the purpose and techniques used in “Call 2 Action”, an online and cross-cultural interpretation of the Living Newspaper, aimed at empowering youths, fostering impactful discussions and nurturing creative expressions within classrooms.

Teachers will gain insights into:

  1. Various approaches tailored for facilitating digital collaboration,
  2. Effective techniques to stimulate critical thinking and reflection among students, empowering them to analyse complex societal issues.
  3. Strategies for guiding students in creating meaningful digital products that resonate with global audiences and inspire positive change.

At the end of the workshop, teachers will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement “Call 2 Action” techniques in their classrooms, fostering a culture of critical thinking, empathy, and digital collaboration, empowering the next generation to take charge of their own learning!

Khairina Khalid
General Manager, Teater Ekamatra
Khairina Khalid is a Singaporean producer and production manager who enjoys working on productions that touch on socio-political issues, as well as projects that give a voice for the minority community. Having first been involved in Ekamatra’s youth incubation programme back in 2014, Khai has grown together with the company for almost a decade. Most recently, she produced and facilitated “Call 2 Action”, which has seen three editions and has impacted over a hundred youths globally. In 2022, Call 2 Action was awarded the CDN Digital Learning Award (UK) for its impact as a social learning tool for young people. Currently, she is exploring various ways to create programmes for youths and young audiences, to create more meaningful work that champions the ethnic minority culture.
WORKSHOP 3: Raise-A-Reader: Appropriate Picture Books on Culture and Heritage

The Raise-a-Reader workshop is targeted at educators teaching students aged four to eight years old. Participants will learn about the importance of instilling the habit of reading from young, the various types of picture books, selecting developmentally appropriate books, tips on planning and carrying out reading-related activities, as well as storytelling techniques. For this workshop, the focus will be on books that are related to Malay culture and heritage.

Nur Fitri Muhammad Syafran
Librarian, Collection Planning and Development Team, National Library Board (NLB)
Nur Fitri is a librarian with the NLB’s Collection Planning & Development team, specialising in programmes and services for children, parents and educators. She is passionate about instilling the love for reading in Malay among children and enjoys working with parents and educators who share the same mission. Her work keeps her busy with content development and promotion, conducting and facilitating programmes and workshops, and collaborating with partners. Her previous experience as a Malay Language teacher has also given her a foundation in children’s development that value adds to her current work.
Muhammed Shahril Shaik Abdullah
Librarian, Collection Planning and Development Team, National Library Board (NLB)
Muhammed Shahril Shaik Abdullah is a librarian with the NLB’s Collection Planning & Development team where he oversees reading programmes for children aged one to nine. He holds a Master of Education from Monash University (Australia) with a specialisation in Leadership, Policy and Change. His research interests include children’s literature and critical education. Some of his writings have been published in the book KOMENTAR: Renungan Isu-Isu Semasa published by Berita MediaCorp, and in AMP’s Karyawan magazine.
