Presentation 2: Fusion Food: A Cultural Dynamism? – The teaching of Malay values through Traditional Cuisines and the Impact of Fusion food on the Malay Culture and Tradition among the Youths.

The infusion of different cultures, such as in the ingredients of Malay cuisines, stimulates ideas but also changes our perceptions on how fusion food fosters global awareness among youths.

Fusion food is gaining popularity among the youths in Singapore and food culture is a big part of our life. By intentionally incorporating fusion food into the lesson on identity, students explore the controversial concept of ‘Fusion Food: A Cultural Dynamism?’ Students were challenged to create their own fusion-menu, showcased their cooking skills in a video presentation, and developed their own perspectives on what fusion food means to them.

This lesson encouraged students to reflect on the extent to which fusion food has either flourished or eroded Malay values and cultures, and how it has impacted them and future generations.

Attendees can gain insights on engaging students in critical thinking, cultural appreciation, and self-expression while preserving the essence of Malay heritage.
